Romania summoned Russia’s ambassador on Friday after a Russian drone crashed into the eastern city of Galați, injuring people and causing property damage, the foreign ministry said.

The ministry said the ambassador of the Russian Federation was called to its headquarters on the orders of Foreign Minister Oana Țoiu following what it described as an “extremely serious” incident caused by the crash of a Russian drone during an overnight attack on Ukraine.

Romania strongly condemned what it called a violation of its airspace and said the incident directly endangered the lives and safety of Romanian citizens. Bucharest said it had repeatedly warned Moscow about the risks posed by its escalating military actions linked to the war in Ukraine.

The Romanian government said Russia bore sole responsibility for the incident and urged Moscow to halt its attacks on Ukraine, arguing that they have direct consequences for regional security and constitute serious violations of international law.

During the meeting, Romanian authorities informed the Russian side that the Russian consul general in Constanța had been declared persona non grata (an unwelcome diplomat who must leave the country) and ordered to depart within 72 hours. Romania also announced the closure of Russia’s consulate general in the Black Sea city.

Romania said it would continue coordinating its response with NATO allies, European Union partners and international organizations, while taking all necessary measures to protect national security.
