The European Union condemned what it described as a reckless violation of its airspace after a Russian drone carrying explosives crashed into a residential building in the Romanian city of Galați during an overnight attack on Ukraine.

In a statement issued on behalf of the bloc, the EU expressed solidarity with Romania and those affected by the incident, calling it a serious consequence of Russia’s war against Ukraine.

The EU said Russia bore full responsibility for the incident and accused Moscow of endangering the security of EU citizens, regional stability and international peace through its continued military actions.

The bloc reaffirmed its commitment to the security of Romania and all member states and said it was prepared to accelerate efforts to strengthen protection against similar threats, including through Eastern Flank Watch and broader initiatives aimed at improving European defence readiness.

The statement said the EU would continue enhancing the protection of its land, air and maritime borders, particularly along its eastern flank, while strengthening resilience and coordinated responses to security threats.

The incident reinforced the bloc’s determination to support Ukraine in its defence against Russia and in its pursuit of a comprehensive, just and lasting peace in line with international law and the United Nations Charter, the statement said.

The EU also pledged to increase pressure on Moscow by expanding sanctions and working with international partners to raise the cost of Russia’s war and disrupt its military capabilities.
