U.S. President Donald Trump on Thursday sharply escalated tensions with Iran, saying the United States would hit the country “VERY HARD TONIGHT” and later take control of key Iranian energy infrastructure, including Kharg Island, the country’s principal oil export hub.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump said Iran’s navy, air force, radar systems, anti-aircraft defenses and much of its offensive military capability were “GONE.” He added that “at some point in the not too distant future” the United States would be “taking Kharg Island, and other oil infrastructure points” and would assume “total control” of Iran’s oil and gas markets, comparing the move to what he described as the U.S. approach toward Venezuela.

The remarks represent one of Trump’s most forceful statements since the latest phase of the U.S.-Iran confrontation began and are likely to heighten concerns about a broader regional conflict.
Kharg Island is a key pillar of Iran’s economy, handling the bulk of the country’s oil exports. Any disruption to the facility could significantly affect global energy supplies and oil prices, while also increasing tensions across the Middle East.
Trump’s latest warning comes amid continued international focus on Iran’s nuclear programme. Earlier this year, the U.S. president repeatedly indicated that negotiations with Tehran were progressing and suggested that a potential agreement could be reached.
The latest comments signal a tougher public posture by Washington, combining diplomatic engagement with heightened military and economic pressure. The remarks are expected to draw close scrutiny from U.S. allies and regional powers amid growing uncertainty over the future course of relations between Washington and Tehran.
With energy markets already sensitive to geopolitical developments, any escalation involving Iran’s oil infrastructure could have far-reaching implications for regional security and the global economy.
