Imprisoned Iranian journalist and 2023 Nobel Peace Prize laureate Narges Mohammadi has been transferred to Tehran’s Pars Hospital after her prison sentence was temporarily suspended for serious medical reasons, according to the Narges Foundation.
According to the foundation, Mohammadi was moved by ambulance after spending 10 days hospitalized in Zanjan. She is now being treated by her own medical team at the Tehran hospital. The organisation thanked the international community for its unwavering solidarity, but said the temporary suspension of her sentence was not enough and stressed that she requires permanent and specialized medical care.
The foundation also called for Mohammadi’s unconditional release and the dismissal of all charges against her, warning that she should not be returned to prison to serve the remaining 18 years of her sentence.
Earlier on May 6, United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) expressed deep concern over the medical condition of imprisoned Iranian journalist and activist Narges Mohammadi, urging Iranian authorities to ensure she receives urgent medical treatment.
In a statement, UNESCO had said Mohammadi — a UNESCO/Guillermo Cano laureate and Nobel Peace Prize winner — must be granted full respect for her rights, safety, and wellbeing amid concerns over her health condition while in custody. The organization called on authorities to provide immediate medical care. “We call for full respect of her rights, her safety and wellbeing”, UNESCO said.
In a statement issued on May 9, the European External Action Service said the European Union was “deeply alarmed” by reports regarding Mohammadi’s serious health condition while in detention in Iran.
The EU urged Iranian authorities to ensure Mohammadi receives “adequate medical care” and reiterated its call for her “immediate and unconditional release,” stating that the charges against her stem solely from her peaceful human rights advocacy.
The statement also called on Iran to release all individuals “unjustly arrested” for exercising their freedom of expression, including during recent protests, and urged Tehran to uphold its obligations under international law, including the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights.
