Iran launched a barrage of missiles toward Israel on Sunday amid escalating regional tensions, according to Iranian and Israeli officials.

Iranian state media reported that the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Aerospace Force targeted Israel’s Ramat David Air Base with ballistic missiles, describing the strike as a response to what it called Israeli actions in southern Lebanon that resulted in civilian deaths and displacement.

The report said the operation was intended as a warning and cautioned that any further attacks would prompt a broader response targeting what it described as U.S. and Israeli interests across the region.

Videos circulating on social media showed missiles streaking across the night sky after being launched from Iran.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) confirmed that missiles had been fired toward Israeli territory and said its air defense systems were working to intercept the incoming threats.

“The IDF identified missiles launched from Iran toward Israel. Defensive systems are operating to intercept the threat,” the military said in a statement.

Following Iran’s retaliatory strikes, U.S. President Donald Trump called on Tehran to halt its missile attacks and return to negotiations, as concerns mounted over the risk of a wider regional conflict.

Iran says strikes were carried out under its “legitimate right of self-defence”

In a statement issued on June 7 (local time in Iran), Iran’s Foreign Ministry said the strikes were conducted following what it described as repeated violations of the April 8 ceasefire and continued aggressive actions by Israel against Lebanon and Iran.

The ministry alleged that Israel, in coordination with the United States, had been involved in attacks on Iranian vessels and targets in recent weeks, as well as acts of what it called maritime piracy against Iran. It said Iranian armed forces struck several military targets in northern Israeli-controlled territory on Sunday evening within the framework of the country’s inherent right to self-defence under Article 51 of the United Nations Charter.

Iran said it remained firmly committed to defending its national security and interests wherever it deemed necessary. The statement added that the Lebanon ceasefire was an integral part of the April 8 ceasefire understanding and accused the United States of bearing direct responsibility for alleged Israeli violations of the agreement and any resulting escalation in the region.

The ministry further warned that any “adventurous” action by Israel against Lebanon or Iran would be met with what it described as a decisive and comprehensive response from Iranian armed forces.
