The United States has carried out military strikes against Iran following what it described as an Iranian drone attack on a commercial cargo vessel transiting the Strait of Hormuz, according to the U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM).
In a statement issued on Friday, CENTCOM said U.S. forces launched strikes on June 26 targeting Iranian missile and drone storage facilities as well as coastal radar sites. The operation was conducted in response to an alleged attack a day earlier on the M/V Ever Lovely, a Singapore-flagged cargo ship.
According to CENTCOM, the vessel was exiting the Strait of Hormuz along the Omani coast on June 25 when it was struck by a one-way attack drone allegedly launched by Iran, causing damage to the ship.
The U.S. military described the incident as an “unwarranted aggression” against commercial shipping, claiming it violated the ceasefire and undermined freedom of navigation through one of the world’s most important maritime trade routes.
CENTCOM said its forces continue to coordinate and support the safe passage of commercial vessels transiting the Strait of Hormuz. It added that U.S. forces remain deployed in the region to ensure compliance with the agreement governing the ceasefire and to safeguard maritime security.
Iran has not immediately commented on the U.S. strikes or the allegations regarding the attack on the commercial vessel.
