The death toll from twin earthquakes that struck Venezuela on Wednesday evening has risen to at least 920, while more than 4,000 people have been displaced, National Assembly President Jorge Rodríguez said on Friday, as rescue workers continued searching for survivors in the country’s worst-hit coastal region.
Rodríguez said 3,360 people had been injured and more than 4,000 had been affected by the disaster as technical inspections continued to uncover extensive structural damage. The state of La Guaira, including the parish of Macuto, bore the brunt of the magnitude 7.2 and 7.5 earthquakes.
Authorities said the twin quakes damaged 1,423 structures, including residential buildings, hospitals and shopping centres, raising concerns over further risks from weakened infrastructure.
