Israel has carried out a fresh airstrike on Beirut’s southern suburbs, escalating tensions in Lebanon despite an existing ceasefire and ongoing diplomatic efforts aimed at ending broader regional hostilities.

The strike targeted the Dahiyeh district, drawing strong condemnation from Iran. Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf said the attack demonstrated either a lack of willingness or an inability on the part of the United States to uphold its commitments.

“The Zionists’ incursion into Dahiyeh has once again shown that America either lacks the will to fulfill its commitments or the ability to do so,” Ghalibaf said. “By giving the green light to the regime, you cannot gain concessions. The game of bad cop and good cop is outdated.”

He further warned that progress toward any broader agreement would be difficult if commitments were not honored.

“If you lack the will and ability to fulfill your commitments, speaking of continuing the path is not possible,” he added.

The Israeli strike also prompted a rare public rebuke from U.S. President Donald Trump, who expressed concern that the attack could undermine ongoing peace negotiations involving Iran and regional actors.

Posting on Truth Social, Trump said, “This morning’s attack on Beirut should not have happened, particularly on a special day when we are so close to a Peace Deal with Iran.”

“Israel has the right to defend itself against threats, but the attack it was responding to was very small and meaningless, nobody was hurt, injured, or killed, and should not disrupt this important process,” he claimed.

Trump added that negotiations were nearing a breakthrough that could help stabilize the region, including Lebanon.

“We are very close to a Deal that will bring peace to the region, including to Lebanon, and all sides should stand down,” he said. “There should be no more attacks by Israel anywhere in Lebanon, but there should also be no more attacks by any other party, including Hezbollah, against Israel.”

Calling for restraint from all sides, Trump concluded that the current moment could represent a historic opportunity for peace.

“This could be the beginning of a long and beautiful peace — let’s not blow it,” he said.

UN Chief Condemns Israeli Attack on Beirut

Meanwhile, António Guterres strongly condemned the Israeli strikes on Beirut, saying they occurred despite the ceasefire and at a sensitive moment when Washington and Tehran are reportedly close to reaching an agreement that could help resolve the wider conflict.

In a post on X, Guterres said the conflict was having a “devastating impact on the world’s economy” and urged all parties to exercise maximum restraint.

“I strongly condemn today’s Israeli strikes on Beirut. The strikes took place despite the ceasefire and at a time when the US and Iran are expected to reach an agreement that will pave the way to a peaceful resolution of this conflict,” he said.

Guterres added that he hoped ongoing diplomatic efforts between the United States and Iran would produce a successful outcome and help prevent further escalation in the region.

Ghalibaf Vows Resistance Will ‘Dismantle’ Israeli Warmongering

In a later post on X, Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf said Israel would not be able to isolate what he described as the “pillars of resistance” in the region.

“They can never catch any part of the pillars of resistance alone and isolated,” Ghalibaf wrote.

He said the efforts of Lebanese fighters and Iran’s diplomacy would help safeguard Lebanon’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, and would “dismantle the crazy antics and warmongering of the Israeli regime.”

The remarks came hours after Ghalibaf accused the United States of failing to uphold its commitments following the Israeli strike on Beirut’s southern suburbs.

Iran Condemns Israeli Strike on Beirut Suburb, Holds U.S. Responsible

Iran’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Sunday strongly condemned Israel’s attack on a residential area in Beirut’s southern suburb (Dahiyeh), which it said resulted in the death and injury of a number of Lebanese citizens.

In a statement, the ministry described the strike as a clear violation of Lebanon’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. It also said the attack constituted a breach of the ceasefire agreement reached on April 8, 2026.

The ministry stated that the United States bears direct responsibility for Israel’s actions and for what it described as repeated violations of the ceasefire against Lebanon and Iran.

Reaffirming Tehran’s position, the statement said Iran remains determined to take all necessary measures to exercise its legitimate right to self-defense.

The ministry further warned that responsibility for the consequences of any escalation affecting regional peace and security would rest with the United States and Israel.
