In a major diplomatic development, U.S. President Donald J. Trump announced via Truth Social that he has personally brokered a three-day ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine, effective immediately for May 9th, 10th, and 11th.
President Trump revealed that the deal was reached through direct communication with both Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
The agreement centers on the shared historical significance of Victory Day. Trump said the celebration in Russia marks Victory Day, but noted that Ukraine also played a major role in World War II.
The agreement mandates a complete halt to all “kinetic activity” across all fronts for the 72-hour period. A landmark prison swap will see 1,000 prisoners from each country returned home—one of the largest exchanges since the conflict began, he said.
President Trump credited the breakthrough to personal negotiations, stating, “I very much appreciate its agreement by President Vladimir Putin and President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.”
Trump characterized this truce not just as a temporary pause, but as a potential turning point for the “biggest conflict since World War II.”
“Hopefully, it is the beginning of the end of a very long, deadly, and hard fought War,” Trump stated. “Talks are continuing on ending this Major Conflict… and we are getting closer and closer every day.”
