Ayatollah Seyed Mojtaba Hosseini Khamenei has been appointed the third Supreme Leader of the Islamic Republic of Iran by representatives of the Assembly of Experts, the powerful clerical body responsible for selecting the country’s supreme leader.

Born in 1969 in the holy city of Mashhad, Mojtaba Khamenei is the second son of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who was killed in recent U.S. and Israeli strikes.

According to reports, the announcement regarding the new supreme leader was made after an extraordinary meeting of the Assembly of Experts, which convened to choose a successor following the death of Iran’s long-serving leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

With his appointment, Mojtaba Khamenei becomes the third supreme leader since the 1979 Islamic Revolution, succeeding Ruhollah Khomeini, the founder of the Islamic Republic, and his father, Ali Khamenei.
