Embassy recommends American citizens in the Kingdom continue to shelter in place

Amid rising tensions in Western Asia, Iran reportedly launched an attack on the U.S. Embassy in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia’s capital. Initial reports indicate that two drones struck the embassy, though the full extent of the damage is still being assessed. Authorities have confirmed the drone attack.

According to a statement shared on X by Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Defense, the embassy “was subjected to an attack by two drones, resulting in a limited fire and minor material damage to the building,” as per initial estimates.

The attack comes as the regional situation continues to deteriorate following U.S.-Israel strikes on Iran, which reportedly killed Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. In retaliation, Iran has launched widespread attacks on U.S. bases, infrastructure across the region, and in Israel.

Following a drone attack on the U.S. Embassy in Riyadh, the embassy announced on its official X account that it will remain closed on Tuesday, March 3. “All routine and emergency American Citizen Services appointments are cancelled,” the statement said.

The embassy further advised that the shelter-in-place notification for Jeddah, Riyadh, and Dhahran remains in effect. “We recommend American citizens in the Kingdom continue to shelter in place and avoid the embassy until further notice due to an attack on the facility,” the statement added.

The embassy also highlighted that non-essential travel to any military installations in the region continues to be restricted. “The U.S. Mission to Saudi Arabia continues to monitor the regional situation,” the post said.

American citizens were urged to review the latest Security Alerts, reconsider travel plans in case of disruptions, and maintain personal safety plans. The embassy stressed that crises can occur unexpectedly while traveling or living abroad, and having a plan helps individuals determine the best course of action in advance.
