The Turkish Ministry of National Defense on Thursday claimed a ballistic munition launched from Iran and assessed to be heading toward Turkish airspace was intercepted and neutralized by NATO air and missile defense assets in the Eastern Mediterranean.

According to the ministry, the projectile crossed Iraqi and Syrian airspace before being engaged.

A fragment that fell in Hatay’s Dörtyol district was identified as part of the air defense munition used during the interception. Authorities said no casualties or injuries were reported.

The ministry added that Turkey remains fully capable of defending its territory and airspace and warned against actions that could further escalate tensions in the region. It also said consultations with NATO and allied partners would continue.
