UN Security Council to Meet Urgently

Russia and China called for an emergency meeting: Reports

February 28: The United Nations Security Council will hold an urgent meeting following escalating tensions in the Middle East after strikes by the United States and Israel on Iran, and Iran’s subsequent missile and drone attacks targeting Israel and U.S. bases in the region.

The session was requested by Russia and China and called for urgent international discussions. Some council members supported convening the meeting.

According to reports, the strikes targeted locations linked to Iran’s military infrastructure, including sites in Tehran, Isfahan and Qom.

Iran later responded with missile and drone strikes targeting Israel and facilities hosting U.S. forces in the region, including bases in Qatar, Bahrain and the United Arab Emirates, raising fears of a broader regional confrontation.

Meanwhile, António Guterres, Secretary-General of the United Nations, warned that the escalating hostilities threaten international peace and security.

He called for an immediate cessation of hostilities and urgent de-escalation, urging all parties to return to diplomacy and resolve disputes in accordance with international law and the UN Charter.

With airspace restrictions reported across parts of the Middle East and tensions continuing to rise, diplomats say the Security Council meeting will focus on preventing further escalation and exploring diplomatic avenues to stabilize the situation.
