The Bridge Will Be Repaired as Soon as Possible, Say Officials

Ludhiana, January 16: The members of the Public Action Committee (PAC) visited the Ishar Nagar Sidhwan Canal Bridge and raised significant concerns over its deteriorating condition. They questioned the quality of the construction work carried out in the past, warning of potential risks to public safety. PAC members Kapil Arora, Jaskirat Singh, and Kuldeep Singh Khaira said, “The state of the bridge is alarming. We have serious concerns about the quality of the work done previously. The requisite steps must be taken immediately to avert any mishap.”

In response to these concerns, officials from the WRD have acknowledged the issue. “There is a bridge at RD 55725 on the Sidhwan Canal, passing through Ludhiana City, known as the Ishar Nagar Bridge,” a spokesperson stated. It was brought to the attention of this office by some citizens of the city that the steel in the lower part of the bridge is exposed, and this bridge should be reviewed.

Taking immediate action, the Executive Engineer of the Ludhiana Canal and Ground Water Division, WRD, Ludhiana, along with field staff, visited the site. It was observed that the bridge, constructed nearly 17-18 years ago, has suffered significant wear due to the flow of water, which has washed off the concrete from the upstream section of the pier, leaving the steel reinforcement exposed, the official said.

The official informed that a file has already been sent to the Central Design Office of the Water Resources Department in Chandigarh for advice regarding the bridge’s repair. “As per the recommendation of the said office, the bridge will be repaired as soon as possible,” the official said.
