PEDA Directed to Expedite Biogas Plant Projects for Proper Disposal of Cow Dung

Regular Monitoring of Dyeing Industry CETPs and STPs Ordered

Ludhiana, December 29: Local Bodies Minister Dr. Ravjot Singh and Rajya Sabha MP Balbir Singh Seechewal visited the ‘Buddha Dariya’ site and the 225 MLD Jamalpur Sewerage Treatment Plant (STP) on Tajpur Road on Sunday.

To address the issue of cow dung being dumped in ‘Buddha Dariya,’ Local Bodies Minister Dr. Ravjot Singh and MP Seechewal directed PEDA officials to expedite the establishment of biogas plants at the Haibowal and Tajpur Road dairy complexes for the proper disposal of cow dung. One biogas plant is already operational at the Haibowal dairy complex, and another plant will be set up there to use cow dung for generating biogas.

Additionally, civic body officials have been instructed to hire private contractors for lifting cow dung from the dairy complexes and depositing it at designated points until the biogas plants are fully functional. Machinery and manpower have already been deployed for this task, and tenders will be floated for hiring contractors.

Dr. Ravjot Singh and MP Seechewal also directed Punjab Pollution Control Board (PPCB) officials to regularly monitor the functioning of the dyeing industry’s CETPs and STPs. They have been instructed to take steps to ensure that electroplating industry waste is not discharged into the sewer lines.

Furthermore, sewerage board officials and contractors working on the ‘Buddha Dariya’ project have been directed to make temporary arrangements for pumping sewerage waste from the Gaushala point to the Jamalpur STP until the Intermediate Pumping Station (IPS) is established at the Gaushala site. The Gaushala IPS project is currently pending due to an ongoing court case. Contractors have also been instructed to ensure proper connections for dairy units to prevent dairy waste from entering the ‘Buddha Dariya.’

Cabinet Minister Dr. Ravjot Singh and MP Seechewal emphasized that they are not against any industry or sector, but no one will be allowed to pollute the ‘Buddha Dariya.’ The state government is closely monitoring the project to clean the river. They urged the public to support the government and stop dumping waste into the river.

MP Seechewal added that the second phase of the ‘Kar Sewa’ for rejuvenating ‘Buddha Dariya’ has already begun, and illegal sewer connections from a few dairy units have been disconnected in recent weeks.

MP Seechewal has set up a tent at the ‘Buddha Dariya’ site for the ‘Kar Sewa’ and appealed to the public to join the movement aimed at cleaning the river, which holds both historic and religious significance.

Ludhiana East MLA Daljit Singh Bhola Grewal, Ludhiana North MLA Madan Lal Bagga, Ludhiana West MLA Gurpreet Bassi Gogi, Ludhiana Central MLA Ashok Prashar Pappi, Additional Chief Secretary of the Local Bodies Department Tejveer Singh, Director of the Local Bodies Department Gurpreet Singh Khaira, MC Commissioner Aaditya Dachalwal, Chief Engineer Ravinder Garg, Ludhiana Chief Engineer of PPCB RK Rattra, and Engineer-in-Chief of Punjab Water Supply and Sewerage Board (PWSSB) Mukesh Garg were also present during the visit.
