Following fresh threats by Donald Trump against Iran, calls for his removal from office have intensified, with a growing number of U.S. lawmakers and political figures urging impeachment or the invocation of the 25th Amendment to the United States Constitution. Critics say the President’s latest remarks reflect a dangerous escalation and raise serious concerns about his judgment and handling of national security.
Earlier, in a sharp escalation of the ongoing conflict, President Donald Trump threatened that “a whole civilization will die tonight” if Iran fails to meet his deadline to reopen the Strait of Hormuz. The threatening statement, shared on social media, has drawn widespread condemnation both within the United States and internationally.
Reacting strongly, Congressman Robert Garcia said Trump’s threats to wipe out the Iranian people should be taken seriously, accusing the President of being “out of control” and calling on his cabinet to remain loyal to the Constitution by invoking the 25th Amendment. “He must be removed,” Garcia said.
Congressman Mark Pocan called for the immediate invocation of the 25th Amendment to the United States Constitution, stating that Trump is “too unhinged, dangerous, and deranged to have the nuclear codes.” His remarks add to the growing chorus of U.S. lawmakers demanding urgent action over concerns about the President’s conduct and its potential global consequences.
Congresswoman Nikema Williams said the President Trump’s remarks show he is “unfit to serve,” pointing to his warning that “a whole civilization will die tonight.” She said that every cabinet member and Republican who is silent on his blatant threat to humanity is betraying the American people and their duty to check the presidency. She called for Trump’s impeachment.
Congresswoman Yassamin Ansari, representative for Arizona’s Third Congressional District, also criticized the escalation, accusing Trump of pushing an illegal and devastating conflict while threatening attacks on civilian infrastructure. She said the rhetoric in recent days has “crossed every line,” adding that she is calling for the 25th Amendment to be invoked and is introducing articles of impeachment against Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth.
In another post on X, Ansari wrote, “Donald Trump is threatening genocide and war crimes against the Iranian civilian population. His rhetoric is apocalyptic. This is a grave moment in world history, and we should all be doing everything in our power to stop him.”
Meanwhile, Senator Bernie Sanders said when Trump threatens ‘a whole civilization will die tonight,’ he is talking about killing thousands of innocent men, women and children in Iran, and leaving millions without access to clean drinking water, electricity and healthcare. This would be a gross violation of international law and a war crime, he said.
He said, “There are more than a few Republicans in Congress who know that what Trump is proposing is not only immoral, but is the action of a deranged individual suffering from extreme narcissism.” He added, “Now is the time for these Republicans to speak up. Trump must be stopped. This war must end.”
Democrats React to Trump’s Threat to ‘Kill a Whole Civilization’
The House Democratic Leadership, in its statement released today, said, “Donald Trump is completely unhinged. His statement threatening to eradicate an entire civilization shocks the conscience and requires a decisive congressional response. The House must come back into session immediately and vote to end this reckless war of choice in the Middle East before Donald Trump plunges our country into World War III.”
They said, “For years, Republicans have enabled and excused Donald Trump’s deeply dangerous and extreme behavior. Enough is enough. Our brave men and women in uniform have been put into harm’s way in the Middle East. Over a dozen have already been killed and hundreds injured. Gas prices are skyrocketing, the cost of living in America is out of control and billions of taxpayer dollars are being wasted on a reckless war of choice.”
“It’s time for House Republicans to put patriotic duty over party loyalty and join Democrats in stopping this madness”, they added.
