Jagjit Singh Dallewal’s Fast-Unto-Death Reaches 28th Day; Farmers Warn of Escalation Over Unmet Demands

Ludhiana, December 23: Samyukt Kisan Morcha (SKM) staged a protest here today in the rain, voicing pressing demands including saving the life of farmer leader Jagjit Singh Dallewal (who is on a fast-unto-death  at the Khanauri border protest site), halting atrocities against farmers marching towards Delhi, and releasing all farmers detained in Uttar Pradesh.

The protestors also called for the immediate rollback of the National Agriculture Market Policy and urged the central government to initiate dialogue with all farmer organisations involved in the ongoing struggle.

The gathering paid tribute to Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji’s Sahibzadas and other martyrs, pledging to draw inspiration from their sacrifices.

Speakers at the event accused the BJP-led central government of being under corporate influence, alleging plans to take over farmers’ lands and hand them to corporate giants. They further claimed that corporate entities aim to manipulate food production and deprive the common people of basic rights. SKM demanded the immediate repeal of “anti-farmer and anti-labour” policies and the implementation of people-centric measures.

Protestors in large numbers raised slogans against the government, warning of an intensified struggle if their demands were not addressed. The event was presided over by Charan Singh Nurpura, Harnek Singh Gujjarwal, Chamkaur Singh Barmi, Baljit Singh Garewal, Mandeep Singh, and Sukhdev Singh Garewal.

Prominent leaders who addressed the gathering included Sudagar Singh Ghudani (BKU Ugrahan), Raghbir Singh Benipal (Democratic Kisan Sabha Punjab), Jasvir Singh Jhajj (All India Kisan Sabha 1936), Kuldeep Singh Garewal (All India Kisan Federation), Baldev Singh Latala (All India Kisan Sabha), Boota Singh (Punjab Kisan Union), Jagtar Singh Derka (BKU Dakaunda), Amar Singh Talwandi (BKU Kadian), Gursewak Singh (BKU Burj Gill), Sukhwinder Singh Bhattian (BKU Rajewal), Joginder Singh Dhillon (BKU Lakhowal), Roop Sant Singh Waraich and Sadhu Singh.

The farmers reiterated their resolve to escalate the agitation if the government continued to ignore their demands.

Farmer Leader’s Health Deteriorates

Notably, farmer leader Jagjit Singh Dallewal has been on a fast-unto-death (hunger strike until death)  at the Khanauri border protest site for the past 28 days, highlighting the farmers’ unresolved demands. Dallewal, aged 70, began his hunger strike on November 26, calling for the Centre to establish a legal guarantee for the Minimum Support Price (MSP) of crops. His health has significantly worsened in the past few days, according to the information.
