Ludhiana, December 15: The Public Action Committee (PAC) of Mattewara Jungles, River Satluj, and Buddha Darya has stepped up its efforts to protect trees and promote environmental sustainability in the region.

The initiative, led by noted environmentalist Maninderjit Singh Benepal, brought together environmentalists near the Ferozepur Road Bridge underpass on the Southern Bypass. The event highlighted a collective commitment to tree protection and ecological preservation.

Col. CM Lakhanpal (Retd), a PAC member, stressed that tree plantation is only the beginning of conservation efforts. “Ensuring the survival and growth of these trees requires ongoing care and protection,” he said. He added that a robust surveillance system is essential to monitor the health of newly planted trees and ensure their long-term survival.

As part of the campaign, volunteers undertook a community-driven initiative to save Neem trees from termite damage. The effort involved cleaning tree stems with steel brushes and canal water, digging pits for better airflow and moisture, and removing dry wood scraps to deter termites.

The event saw active participation from a dedicated group of environmentalists. The Ecological Task Force from Rara Sahib was represented by Swarn Singh, Sahil Khan, Harkesh Singh, Hari Singh, Manjit Singh, Bhadhur Singh, Gurmeet Singh, Harnaik Singh, and Supervisor Parmjit Singh. Joining them were several advocates and environmental activists including Advocate Yogesh Khanna, Advocate Ravinder Singh Arora, Advocate Mohinder Singh Grewal, Dr. Sukhleen Kaur Grewal, Ameen Lakhanpal, Advocate Thirth Singh Grewal, Sukhwinder Singh Goldy, Mahinder Singh Sekhon, Master Waris Singh, Shaminder Singh Longowal, Manjinder Singh Grewal, Dan Singh Oshan, and Col. CM Lakhanpal.

Meanwhile, Benepal appealed to the government, urging Chief Minister to fulfil commitments to protect Mattewara Jungles and rejuvenate Buddha Darya. He also called on citizens to become “Saviours of the Environment” and urged government employees to diligently perform their duties to protect the River Satluj.

The PAC announced plans to release a booklet titled “Mother Earth” and launch the Buddha Darya Padyatra Phase-1, inviting citizens to actively participate in these efforts to safeguard the environment.
