First Sikh Prime Minister Who Championed Economic Growth
December 26: Dr. Manmohan Singh, the 13th Prime Minister of India, has passed away at the age of 92, marking the end of an era in Indian politics. Known for his remarkable contributions to the nation’s economy and governance, Dr. Singh leaves behind a legacy that shaped the course of Indian history. As per press releases from AIIMS, New Delhi, Dr. Singh was declared dead at 9:51 PM on Thursday.
Born on September 26, 1932, in Gah, Punjab (now in Pakistan), Dr. Singh’s early life was defined by resilience and determination. His family was displaced during the Partition in 1947, but he pursued his education with unwavering focus. He graduated in economics from Panjab University, earned a master’s degree from Cambridge, and completed a doctorate at Oxford, laying a strong foundation for his career in public service.
Dr. Singh held several significant positions in India’s financial institutions, including Chief Economic Advisor, Reserve Bank Governor, and Planning Commission Chairman. However, his defining moment came in 1991 when, as Finance Minister, he implemented transformative economic reforms to address a severe financial crisis. His policies, including trade liberalization and privatization, opened India’s economy to the world and spurred growth.
In 2004, Dr. Singh became India’s first Sikh Prime Minister, leading the nation with grace and steady leadership. His tenure was marked by key achievements such as the Indo-US nuclear deal and the expansion of social welfare programs. Despite political challenges, his focus on development and inclusivity earned him respect across the political spectrum.
Dr. Singh was admired for his humility, integrity, and calm leadership. A consensus-builder and a true gentleman, he garnered respect from both allies and critics.
He is survived by his wife, Gursharan Kaur, and three daughters.
