Mirabai Chanu added the first medal to India’s medal tally on the first day of the Tokyo Olympics. She won the silver medal in the 49 kg category in weightlifting. 

Mirabai lifted a total of 202kg to finish in second place. She becomes the second weightlifter who has won a medal in Olympics in the weightlifting category. Before Mirabai, Karnam Malleswari got India a bronze in the 2000 Olympics. 

Mirabai hails from Manipur, and she was awarded the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna award by the Government of India in 2018. The 26 years old weightlifter had successfully won a gold medal in 2018’s Commonwealth Games in the Women’s 48 kg game.
